Augmentation mammaplasty, commonly known as breast augmentation cosmetic surgery, is a procedure designed to enhance breast size through insertion of saline or silicone implants. At present, breast augmentation ranks as the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in the country, with one of the highest patient satisfaction rates in cosmetic medicine.
Although most women choose breast augmentation for cosmetic enhancement, it can also be used in breast construction to restore breast appearance after a mastectomy. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Amir Nasir provides breast augmentation to patients in New Haven, Westport, CT, and surrounding communities.
Customizable Procedure
A significant degree of customization is possible in breast augmentation, which is one of the reasons behind its high popularity. Women who want to undergo this plastic surgery procedure have several options, which give them a fair amount of control over their desired results. These options include:
Implant Type
The FDA has approved saline, silicone gel, and ultra-cohesive silicone implants for cosmetic breast augmentation procedures. The patient also has a choice of implant sizes ranging from 120 cc to 960 cc, and implant shapes, which can be round or anatomical.
Implant Positioning
The surgeon can place the implants below the pectoral muscle or above the pectoral muscle, just behind the breast tissue. Each option has its pros and cons, and the surgeon will help the patient make the appropriate choice.
Incision Location
The surgeon may place the incisions in a discreet location below the breast crease, along the lower half of the areola, in the armpit, or even in the navel. This decision will be made after taking into account the patient’s breast anatomy, size of implants, and her concerns of scarring.
Need for Breast Implant Surgery
A woman may choose breast implant surgery for a variety of reasons, which may include:
- Increasing the size of naturally small breasts
- Creating a more voluptuous or feminine breast appearance
- Correcting symmetry between the breasts
- Restoring breast volume after pregnancy or major weight loss
- Correcting congenital defects in one or both breasts
- Restoring breast appearance after mastectomy
- Improving body image and self-esteem
Experienced cosmetic surgeon Dr. Nasir receives patients from New Haven, Westport, CT, and nearby areas for breast implants.
Procedure
Following anesthesia, the surgeon will begin the procedure by placing incisions in pre-planned locations. A breast pocket will be surgically carved through the incision, and the implants will be placed submuscularly or subglandularly as decided during the surgical planning.
Once the implants are securely placed and adjusted into the desired position, the surgeon will close the incisions carefully with sutures. Drain tubes will be placed under the skin in the incision areas for a few days to collect excess fluid. The breasts will be wrapped with bandages to support initial healing.
Recovery
The patient should take plenty of rest in the first week, but perform short walks frequently at home to promote blood flow. Strenuous activities, bending and lifting of anything that is heavy should be avoided for a few weeks. The patient can usually return to normal routine or go back to work after a week or 10 days.
