Breast Augmentation Risks and Safety

Breast Augmentation Risks and Safety | New Haven Plastic SurgeryBreast augmentation currently ranks as the number one cosmetic surgery procedure in the US, according to the ASPS figures. Less invasive surgical techniques, shorter recovery and advanced implant qualities have contributed to the procedure’s growing popularity. However, like any other surgery, breast augmentation still involves certain potential risks and complications.

During the initial consultation, the surgeon will educate the patient about breast augmentation, and explain its potential risks. The first goal of the surgeon will be to help the patient make an informed choice. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Amir Nasir provides breast augmentation to patients in New Haven, Westport, CT, and surrounding communities.

Implant-related Risks

Some of the risks in breast augmentation plastic surgery are specific to the procedure because it involves the placement of silicone or saline implants in the breast tissue.

Capsular Contracture

The body’s natural healing mechanism is set in motion when the breast implants are placed in the breast pocket. Formation of natural scar tissue will occur around the implants. In some cases, this scar tissue may tend to contract or harden, placing extra pressure on the implants.

The implants may be squeezed due to the tightening of scar tissue, causing them to lose their shape, position or get damaged. Breast capsule hardening may also cause pain. In these situations, the surgeon may recommend breast implant replacement or removal procedure.

Implant Rippling

In some cases, the breast skin may be sufficient to cover the implant comfortably, particularly in case of larger sized implants. This may lead to the creation of wrinkles or folds in the implant. This can reveal a rippling effect, causing distortion of the natural breast appearance.

An experienced cosmetic surgeon will recommend the optimal implant size and shape according to the skin availability and breast anatomy of the patient. This can minimize the risk of implant ripping. Dr. Nasir receives patients from New Haven, Westport, CT, and nearby areas for breast augmentation.

Implant Rupture or Malposition

In exceptional situations, the implant may shift from its original position soon after the breast augmentation surgery was performed. The risk of displacement is higher in case of larger sized implants. Implant rupture risk will exist for all types of implants.

In case of saline implant rupture, the implant deflation will occur and it will be noticed immediately. But in case of silicone implant rupture, the problem may only get noticed during an MRI exam. The condition may be corrected with breast revision surgery.

Surgery-related Risks

Common surgery related risks in breast augmentation include:

Infection

Infection may occur in rare cases during or after the implant procedure. If the surgery center maintains a sterile environment, it will minimize the risk. Antibiotics may be prescribed for a few days after the surgery to reduce the risk of infection in the post-op phase.

Change of Sensation in Nipples

Sensitivity, numbness, or altered sensation may occur in the nipple region after breast implant surgery. The condition is only temporary in most cases, but in rare cases, the problem may be prolonged or become permanent.
