Excessively large breasts can be a significant burden for a woman and can result in neck, back, and shoulder pain. It can also interfere with athletics and cause significant emotional distress. A breast reduction can help solve some of these problems in appropriate patients and can result in a significantly improved quality of life.
Some breast reductions can be done with liposuction only, others are more involved and require more extensive surgery with removal of breast tissue in an operating room setting while you are asleep. Regardless of the procedure, we will help you choose what is right for you.
Breast Reduction Procedure
Breast reduction surgery may be preformed under general anesthesia or IV sedation depending on the individual. The incisions are typically around the circle of the areola and from the bottom of the areola down to the breast crease. Excess fat, tissue, and skin are removed and the nipple and areola is repositioned in proportion to the new placement of the breasts.
Recovery
Recovery from breast reduction varies per individual. Bruising and swelling should be expected and bed rest of three to five days is recommended. Physical activity should be very limited and strenuous exercise should be avoided for ten to fourteen days. Heavy lifting and lifting above the shoulders is restricted for four to six weeks after surgery.
